Office Furniture to Home Entertainment Center

I love a good furniture makeover, and this one doesn't disappoint.

A few weeks ago I received a text from a friend asking if I was interested in a free credenza from his office, they were getting new furniture and it had to go. Um, yes, you had me at free. And then when I saw the picture, um, yes, you had me again, with those beautiful mid-century modern lines!  I knew exactly where its new home was going to be.

This was going to be perfect in my laundry room. I have been on the lookout for a long dresser I could use for storage, and as a place to fold those mountains of laundry that seem to multiply overnight.

But, after breaking out my trusty tape measure, I discovered this beautiful piece of furniture was about a foot to long. Boo! Luckily, there was another perfect spot just waiting for something new! This was going to be perfect in our basement family room!

To say that our basement family room has been neglected in the home decor and styling department would be a massive understatement! It's a space we use, but really have not given much thought to, it's a hodge-podge of furniture from other parts of the house and really needed an upgrade.

After a good cleaning and light sanding, I painted on two coats of Valspar's Tempest Teapot. I love this color! It is a beautiful soft black with blue undertones, but it is so difficult to capture the true color in pictures. In the sunlight (and in pictures) it looks slightly more navy blue than black.

I used Minwax Finishing Wax* to protect the finish and keep the finish more matte than glossy. I also (after hearing all the rave reviews) gave Rub 'n Buff* a try on the hardware. I went with the Antique Gold color and I could not be happier with the results, it was super easy to use and the color was exactly what I was looking for!

I did have to use a hole saw to cut two holes in the back of the cabinet for all the wiring, but it was so easy to do once I recharged the battery on my drill. Don't be intimidated to update a piece of furniture to make it functional for you, and don't get caught up in what the original use for it was either, think outside the box!

Room overhauls tend to cost a lot of money when done all at once, but it's easy to make a room come to life if you are willing to be patient and take your time with it. We needed a new entertainment center in this room very badly, but shopping for something new wasn't on the priority list at all. As luck would have it, the free credenza that was too big for the laundry room, was perfect in the basement!

This office credenza was, unknowingly, the perfect entertainment center for our basement. Now, we are on a mission to makeover the entire family room and turn it into the hangout/gathering space that we have always wanted it to be. Stay tuned for more updates and a full reveal coming soon!

  4. What a nice transformation. It is the best makeover I have ever seen because no one can realize that the TV stand was basically a office desk. Thanks for sharing this outstanding makeover.
