Using Placemats To Make Pillows For Under $2 Each

Decorating on a budget is the name of the game around here. I love updating my home decor, but I love to save money too. I needed a couple of new pillows for our couch, but I can't stand the thought of spending $20+ per pillow!

I am not opposed to making my pillows, and I often do, just because I can do it somewhat inexpensively, and I like the thought of having something that is a little unique, and not in everyone else's living rooms. My latest trip to Target found me in the home goods area, looking for those little red stickers, and the kitchen area ended up being the answer to my search.

I found these great graphic print placemats marked down to $1,19 each! Um yea, those would make perfect pillows; the size was good and the green was just the color I was looking for to brighten up the couch. Into my cart they went.

The key part to making this as simple as possible is to make sure the placemats are made from 2 pieces of fabric, not just one. (You can always sew 2 placemats together if the one you pick is just a single piece of fabric.) Using a seam ripper, pull apart one seam just large enough for you to be able to fit your hand to fill the placemat with pillow stuffing.

I was lucky enough to have a couple of pillows just sitting in the basement that I sacrificed for the free pillow stuffing. As you are stuffing your pillow, pay careful attention to making sure the corners get filled out. Once the pillow is completed stuffed, just stitch the opening shut and you are all done.

Now I have 2 new spring pillows in my living room for less than $2 each! Sometimes the perfect pieces in your rooms are things that require you to think outside the box from their traditional uses. The best part is, it makes that piece unique to your home, and is one step closer to making your home a reflection of you!

  4. I made those pillows a little while ago for my home, too! (But you got a better price!) I literally made them in about 15 minutes while I waited for my new sofa to arrive! Now I am always stalking the clearance aisle to find new prints so I can make new pillows!
