This bookcase makeover was a fun little weekend project that had amazing results! It was for sure a drab to fab makeover, and is definitely one of my favorite furniture makeovers to date. Are you ready to check it out?
I'm sure I'm not the only one who has a hand-me-down bookcase somewhere in their home. This was mine. The cherry stain didn't match anything, and was just really dark and heavy feeling for such a small piece of furniture.
It was definitely in need of a makeover, and my go-to option is always fresh paint! DecoArt has a new line of Americana Decor Metallics paint that is now available and two of the many available (and gorgeous) colors are Silver and Pewter.

I couldn't decide which color I wanted for the bookcase; the silver seemed a little too light for what I wanted, and the pewter was a little too blue for the room. So, I mixed the two together, and got the beautiful custom color you see here, I'm calling it metallic denim.
Here is the finished bookcase, in the most perfect shade of silvery blue. The metallic quality of the paint had me a little concerned that it would be difficult to get a nice even finish that didn't show streaks or roller marks. But, I was pleasantly surprised with how easy it was to achieve a smooth even finish.
My best advice is to follow the label instructions for sanding between coats, and definitely don't rush. I used a primer since the original color was so dark, and then did three light coats with a foam roller on the bookcase itself. (You can definitely tell that I forgot the third coat on the shelves, oops!) You definitely want to take your time, because this finish is going to show the imperfections if you rush.
This color is such an improvement over the original finish, and now it fits better with the rest of our bedroom too. I don't know that would have said that a metallic blue bookcase fit my decor style a week ago, but now I am sold, and can't imagine this bookcase any other color!
You definitely need to check out this new line of DecoArt Americana Decor Metallics paint! And just like I did, don't feel limited by the colors you see, pick up a few, and custom mix your own color to make your furniture makeover truly one of a kind!
Love that colour! Such a great idea to mix two colours together to get a beautiful custom colour
ReplyDeleteGreat furniture makeover! The update really lifted this bookcase up -- not so heavy and dark, anymore. I love the color that you came up with by mixing the blue and silver. It looks much more contemporary.
ReplyDeleteStunning color, and what a huge improvement over the cherry color! I love that you mixed then and made it your own.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the color. Mixing the blue and silver was genius! It looks so much better with a coat of paint!
