Last-Minute DIY Patriotic Pallet Flag

If you find the Fourth of July holiday sneaking up on you, and you really want to add a patriotic touch to your home's front porch, I have the perfect DIY for you!! All you need is a little paint (or stain) and some pallet wood from your scrap pile.

Here is the supply list so you can create this easy DIY project on your own:

4 - Long Boards (I used 33" boards from a regular pallet)
3 - Short Boards (I used 20.5" boards from a small pallet)
5 - Scrap Board pieces (used on the back)
Star Shape Stencil
Sandpaper
Screws

Since I have a ridiculous amount of pallet wood just sitting around waiting to be used, this was a perfect project to put it to good use. The first thing I did was lay out all my long boards side-by-side; then I laid the short boards side-by-side horizontally at the top of the long boards.

Then, I used some scrap boards from my pallets to create the braces to attach all the boards together. (When you are tearing pallets apart, some of the boards will splinter, and unless the pieces are super small, keep them for little projects like this one!) Flip all your boards so the backsides are facing up, and use your scrap pieces to connect all the boards. Be sure to use screws that are just long enough to attach the boards together and not go through the front.

Once every thing is attached, it's time to start adding your color. This was my first time using the DecoArt Americana Decor line, and I am definitely impressed. I decided to use a few different types of paints and stains, and since this patriotic pallet flag is going to be protected from the elements on the front porch, I didn't worry about sealing it.

I used the Americana Decor Color Stain for the red and white stripes; just painting on an even coat on each board and wiping off the extra. I opted for one coat since I was going for a more rustic look, and this gave good rich color and still let the wood show through. Then I used the Americana Decor Chalky Finish Paint for the blue section. Again, I only used one coat, and the coverage was awesome (and this color of blue is just gorgeous too!). Then for the stars, I just used a stencil I dug out from the kids' art supplies and used the Americana Decor Outdoor Living Paint for the white stars and added a little silver touch to them for fun too!

And, since I wanted a slightly rustic look for this pallet flag I gave it a quick once-over with some fine grit sandpaper to add some character. Then, it was off to the front porch to add the perfect little patriotic touch, just in time for the Fourth of July!
