New Flooring For the Win!

OMG! This flooring update is about 3 months overdue, and I am so excited to finally be sharing it with you! (Can you tell!!) We finally gave our main living areas a big makeover, by updating the flooring everywhere. To say that the main living areas in our home were desperate for new flooring would be an understatement. We knew that updating the flooring was going to make a big difference, we didn't realize this makeover was going to make our home feel bigger, and give it an such an amazing new look!

We decided that we wanted to go with a single type of flooring throughout the main living areas of our home, which includes the entryway, living room, dining room, kitchen, and hallway. These spaces were a mix of 8-year old builder-grade carpet, and tile that was incorrectly installed that has caused the grout to crack since the day we moved in. We also knew that we wanted something with a little bit of a rustic look, that didn't look too perfect, or overly shiny and new. It had to be something that some character, but also fit our budget. Let's take a look back at where we started:

It's crazy how you start to ignore the parts of your home that irritate you, and then one day you finally have enough, and know you have to change it. This flooring was one of those things. Aside from the cosmetic issues with the floor, the transition from the living room to the dining room felt really disjointed with the mix of tile and carpet, see example below:

And one last before shot, this is the entryway, again, the space just feels really cut-off from the living room visually thanks to the different flooring styles.

Because we have amazing friends, we were able to tear out all the flooring in a single day. It was a sun-up to sun-down workday, filled with loud music, Chinese takeout, and some colorful language, but we got it done. We opted to do the demo ourselves and hire out for the installation of our new floors, mostly because we wanted it to get done quickly so we could stop lounging in our camp chairs, and move the real furniture back in.

Adding rustic farmhouse charm to a dining room with a flooring makeover

Aren't they gorgeous?! Here's the best part, they are super easy to maintain, wood-look vinyl tiles! It clicks together like laminate flooring, but is a super durable vinyl. LOVE!!  My favorite part of this flooring update is that is has made our entire home feel so much bigger, every room flows nicely into the next, and each room feels like there is more room to spread out, and I feel less restricted with furniture placement.

This view also shows off the next items on my to-do list, can you spot it? Painting all the trim and stair balusters. I knew I was not going to keep the wood stained trim when we replaced the flooring, I don't like it at all, and this was the perfect time to update it. So, while all the baseboards were removed, I went ahead and painted them...black! If you are looking for me this spring, I will be painting, and painting, and painting.

I so love our new wood-look flooring, my only regret is waiting so long to remove the terrible flooring we had before, but you know, renovating on a budget takes time, and we wanted to get it right on the first go-round.
